Understanding the Egyptian rhythms
is one of the most important aspects of Belly Dance. This workshop is
an opportunity for dancers of all levels to deepen their knowledge of
Egyptian rhythms, developing an awareness of the rhythm in the music and
learning how to dance to it. The CD Tabla Tastic by Guy Schalom with the
different rhythms and some great drum solos will be available to buy at
the workshop (£12) The Different Styles of Egyptian Belly Dance Explore the 3 main styles of Egyptian Belly Dance,
‘Oriental’, ‘Saiidi’ and ‘Baladi’.
The difference between them, how to recognise them in the music, which
steps, moves and costumes characterise them.
The 1940’s were a pivotal time for Egyptian
Belly Dance. The dance was appearing more and more in films, and was influenced
by other forms of dance like ballet and Contemporary dance without losing
it’s authenticity and special flavour. The 70 ‘s saw the re-emergence of Belly Dance
in Egypt after a time when it was banned. A new generation of Belly Dance
soloists ‘rose up from the ashes’ bringing an even more individual,
free style. A comprehensive workshop for all students who want
to learn how to play sagat (finger cymbals / zills) and dance while playing.
You will need a set Sagat for this workshop (pleasae bring spares too
if you have them).
